Are you like me and always save the plastic buckets your plants come in? I figured they might come in handy for something, so they were really starting to stack up in my shed. I decided I wanted to try and fancy them up a little into nicer flower pots. I really like the weathered terra cotta look so here is how I did it.
I first started with these black plastic buckets that the plants come in from the nursery.
I wanted some sort of raised decoration to accent the front, so I bought this applique at Hobby Lobby.
In order to make it fit flush around the bucket, I soaked the applique in some water for a few hours.
I used an old belt to hold the applique on to the bucket to form the shape until it dries.
Here is what it looks like after it dries.
I used super glue to adhere the applique to the plastic bucket and then used the old belt to hold it in place until it dries.
I wasn’t fond of the holes along the bottom of the bucket so I used electrical tape to cover them up. (If you still need drainage holes, you can drill some in the bottom.)
The next thing I did was spray paint. I used a new color called rustic orange from Rust Oleum for the base coat.
I, then, used watered-down chalk paint to “wash” the bucket to create that faux weathered terra cotta look.
Here is what I ended up with when I was finished. What do you think? I really love how it turned out! (I had another blue flower pot that fit inside nicely, so I used it as a color accent.)
