In honor of Earth Day I wanted to do a project that reused some scrap wood I had laying around my garage. And, bonus, I wanted to frame this beautiful leaf print! (I have included this print as a free download for you at the end of this post!)
Check out the Facebook Live video where I demonstrated how to put the frame together. (Video below)
This project was so simple and QUICK! I had a couple pieces of 1/4 “x 1 1/2″ x 48” poplar boards so I just needed some magnets and my favorite stain to complete this project. (I ended up using 3 washers and a metal strapping piece, too.)
My print size was 18″ wide so I cut 4 pieces of wood 19″ (that created a 1/2″ space on either side of the print.) I sanded each piece lightly and then used some hot glue to adhere the metal strapping to one piece. One another piece, I glued 5 magnets (evenly spaced.) When placed together this will create the top piece.
Next, I glued 3 magnets to another piece of wood. And for the other side, I glued 3 washers so they lined up with the magnets.
After the frame was completed, it was time to finish the wood. I used my favorite vinegar/steel wool concoction to stain the pieces.
Once the stain was dry, it was time to assemble it all together. I layed the pieces of wood, with the magnets facing up, on a flat surface (the one with 5 will be on top and the one with three will be the bottom.) I centered the poster on top of the magnet boards. I placed the board with the strapping face down, on top of the five magnets. I, then, placed the wood piece with the 3 washers on top of the bottom piece.
Your frame is now complete! You can, of course, add some embellishments and any kind of picture hanging do-dads.
I used magnets in my project so I can change out the print/poster for the seasons and holidays. If you wanted to keep the same picture, you could just nail the pieces of wood together, once you’ve placed your photo in them.
This project literally took no time and very little money to create. And, the best part, I can finish the frame to match my decor instead of settling for store bought! Also, i used up some scrap wood taking up space!
Happy Crafting!
