Have you ever noticed those project idea leaflets hanging in the craft aisles at Hobby Lobby? Well, one caught our eye during one of our shopping trips and we knew we had to make it! The project was a wood slice letter board. We were, however, a little disappointed that there were really no directions on how to make it. We decided to wing it and figure it out for ourselves. (Facebook Live replay is at the bottom of this post.)
The items we used are as follows:
- Wood Slab
- 1/4″ x 1/4″ square wood dowels
- Wood Glue with an applicator brush
- Wood Stain and rag (optional)
- Hobby saw
- Ruler/Tape Measure
- Sand Paper or Sanding Sponge (not pictured)
(I ended up not using the hot glue.)
The first thing I did was decide that I wanted each dowel to be 12″ long. Note: Your measurements may be different than mine due to the different sizes of boards and personal preference.
The dowels that I purchased were each 3 feet long and I ended up only using 2-12″ pieces out of each. (The leftover third piece was a little shorter due to the width of the saw blade. Besides that’s where the product sticker was and I didn’t feel like prying them off. LOL!)
I measured and marked each piece for every cut.
I used my hobby saw to cut each piece.
Once all my pieces were cut, I loosely layed them on the wood slab to see how many I needed. I used a total of 12 dowels and ended up with 24 – 12″ pieces.
I used a sanding sponge to smooth out the ends of each dowel.
This next step is optional, but I decided I wanted to stain the wood to match my decor.
I used an acid brush to apply my wood glue to one side of the dowel and pressed it down in place. I repeated this step until I filled my wood slab. Hint: I slid a letter board letter between each dowel so I knew how far apart each dowel needed to be.
Here is the finished product. I just LOVE how this turned out. I haven’t seen anything like this in stores, and if I did, I am sure it would be very expensive.
