How many times have you passed over those not-so-pretty candlesticks from the thrift store? Sometimes they just need an updated color to get a new lease on life.
I recently found two of these gold candlesticks at my local thrift store for $1.80 each. I loved the shape and size of them and thought they would make great pedestals for other decor.
I gathered my painting supplies and got started painting.
I used white chalk paint as my base color and used a cheap chip brush to apply the paint. I only did one coat.
I didn’t need full coverage because I will be building upon this base with additional paint colors.
When the white base coat was dry, I started adding in the brown paint. I used a “dry brush” technique, using a chip brush (I cut the bristles down to make the brush stiffer.)
I dabbed the brush in the paint and then wiped most of it on the paper towel.
Using a light hand, I gently drug the brush across the white paint. You will want to paint all coats in the same direction.
Once the brown was dry (which only took a couple minutes), it was time to add the gray. I thought my gray was a little light, so I mixed some black with it. I applied this the same way as the brown paint using the “dry brush” technique.
If you find that you have too much brown or black paint, you can use a wet brush and a little bit of the white to soften the lines.
One candlestick down, one more to go.
Here is a side-by-side comparison of the before and after.
I am using candles here, but just because it’s suppose to be a candlestick doesn’t mean it has to be a candlestick. You can use these beauties for risers or bases for other decor.
Next time you see candlesticks in the thrift store or yard sale, think about how they might look with a make-over and how you could use them in your space.
Happy crafting!
